The CoverForce MCP Server: Setup, Quoting, and Security Guide

Quote commercial insurance right inside Claude, ChatGPT, or any AI assistant that supports MCP.

Quote commercial insurance right inside Claude, ChatGPT, or any AI assistant that supports remote MCP servers. This guide covers what the CoverForce MCP server does, what you need before you start, and how to connect it. You'll also find sample prompts, what the server can and cannot access, and how your data stays protected. Use the table of contents below to jump to any section.

🔭 Overview

Quote commercial insurance by chatting with your AI assistant, using your own carrier appointments. Quote details, binding, and payment stay in the CoverForce agent portal.

What you can do with it

  • Start a new application for a business from its name and address.

  • Resolve the NAICS classification and the class codes each carrier uses.
  • See which of your appointed carriers have appetite for the risk, and choose which of them to quote.
  • Answer only the underwriting questions your selected carriers need for that risk.
  • Add locations with the details each line of business requires.
  • Submit to the carriers you picked and follow the responses as they arrive.
  • Search your agency's applications by business, status, coverage line, or date.

Policy types available today

  • Business Owner's Policy (BOP)
  • Workers' Compensation (WC)
  • Commercial General Liability (CGL)
  • Commercial Property (CP)
  • Miscellaneous Professional Liability (MPL)
  • Builder's Risk (BR)
  • Cyber

This covers 60+ carrier products. You only see the carriers, products, and states your agency is appointed and licensed for.

What it does not do
Some steps happen in the CoverForce agent portal, not in the conversation. This is by design.

  • Quote details: The server reports how many carriers quoted, declined, or failed. Carrier names, premiums, limits, and decline reasons appear in CoverForce. The assistant gives you a link straight to the application, where every quote is shown side by side. Keeping that detail out of the conversation is a condition of our carrier agreements, because AI providers retain conversation history.
  • Binding and payment: Selecting a quote, choosing a payment plan, paying, and binding all happen in the portal.
  • Carrier appointments: Broker codes are managed in the portal under Settings. If a carrier you select has no appointment on file, the assistant gives you the link to add it.
  • Sensitive personal identifiers: The server never asks for or accepts a Social Security number. If a carrier needs one to bind, it is collected in the portal.

How it works with the agent portal

The MCP server and the portal are two views of the same account. Everything you create in a conversation exists immediately in CoverForce, recorded against your agent profile. When quotes come back, the assistant gives you a link to the application in the portal, where you compare quotes and bind.

🎒 Before you start

You need all four of these:

  1. A U.S. property & casualty producer license, active in each state where you quote. The CoverForce MCP server is available to U.S.-based licensed insurance professionals only.
  2. A CoverForce agent login. If your agency already uses CoverForce, you have one. If not, choose Register on the CoverForce sign-in page to create your agency and agent profile. You'll get an email to set your password. New agencies are verified for licensing before activation.
  3. Carrier appointments on file. Add your agency's broker codes in the agent portal under Settings. CoverForce validates each one with the carrier. You can connect the server before your appointments are in place, but you can't quote a carrier without one.
  4. An AI assistant that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth sign-in. Claude and ChatGPT both do. See How to connect for plan requirements.

No CoverForce approval step. You connect as yourself and sign in with your own CoverForce credentials. There is no separate CoverForce admin request.

Wholesaler and network programs. You can quote under a partner agency's appointments where that access has been granted to you.

🪢 How to connect

The CoverForce server URL is the same for every AI assistant:

https://mcp.api.coverforce.com/mcp

You only ever enter your CoverForce password on the CoverForce sign-in page. Your AI assistant never sees it.

Connect in ChatGPT

Who can use it: ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans, on the web at chatgpt.com. It is not available on the Free plan or in the ChatGPT mobile app. ChatGPT calls these integrations Plugins.

Step 1: Turn on Developer mode (one-time setup)

  1. Open ChatGPT in your web browser and click your profile icon in the bottom-left corner.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Security and login.
  4. Turn on Developer mode. If ChatGPT asks you to confirm, select Confirm.

On a Business, Enterprise, or Edu workspace? Your workspace admin must allow Developer mode first (in Workspace settings > Permissions & roles). If you don't see the toggle, ask your admin.

Step 2: Add CoverForce

  1. Go to Plugins (chatgpt.com/plugins).
  2. Select the + button.
  3. Fill in the details:
    • Name: CoverForce
    • Description: Quote commercial insurance through CoverForce
    • MCP server URL: https://mcp.api.coverforce.com/mcp
    • Authentication: OAuth
  4. If shown, check the box acknowledging the plugin is unverified, then select Create.
  5. When the CoverForce sign-in page opens, sign in with your CoverForce email and password (or choose Register if you don't have an account yet).

Step 3: Use it in a chat

  1. Start a new chat.
  2. Select the + button in the message box, then More, and choose CoverForce.
  3. Describe the business you want to quote. See How to use it for sample prompts.

Connect in Claude

Who can use it: Claude Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, on the web at claude.ai or in the Claude desktop app. Free plans can add one custom connector. Claude does not need Developer mode.

Tip: If CoverForce appears in Claude's connector directory, you can connect it from there. Otherwise, follow the steps below.

Individual plans (Free, Pro, Max)

  1. Go to Customize > Connectors.
  2. Click the + button next to Connectors, then select Add custom connector.
  3. Enter a Name (CoverForce) and paste the server URL: https://mcp.api.coverforce.com/mcp
  4. Leave Advanced settings blank and click Add.
  5. Click Connect and sign in on the CoverForce sign-in page.

Team and Enterprise plans

Only an Owner can add a custom connector for your organization. Once it's added, each person connects with their own CoverForce login.

Owner (one-time setup):

  1. Go to Organization settings > Connectors.
  2. Click Add, hover over Custom, then select Web.
  3. Paste the server URL: https://mcp.api.coverforce.com/mcp
  4. Leave Advanced settings blank and click Add.

Each team member:

  1. Go to Customize > Connectors.
  2. Find CoverForce (it will have a "Custom" label).
  3. Click Connect and sign in on the CoverForce sign-in page.

Use it in a chat

  1. Start a new chat.
  2. Select the + button in the message box, open Connectors, and make sure CoverForce is turned on.
  3. Describe the business you want to quote.

On mobile? You can't add a connector from the Claude mobile app, but once it's added on the web or desktop, it works in the mobile app too.

Connect in another AI assistant
CoverForce works with any AI tool that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth sign-in. Menus look different from tool to tool, but setup always follows the same pattern.

Step 1️⃣: Check that your tool supports it

Look in your tool's help docs for "remote MCP server," "custom connector," or "Streamable HTTP." It must also support OAuth sign-in. If it only supports local MCP servers, see the technical option at the end of this section.

Step 2️⃣: Find the right settings page

It's usually labeled one of these: MCP servers, Connectors, Integrations, Tools, Apps, or Plugins. Look for an option like Add server or Add custom.

Step 3️⃣: Enter the CoverForce details

Field What to enter
Name CoverForce
Server URL https://mcp.api.coverforce.com/mcp
Transport or type (if asked) Streamable HTTP (sometimes just "HTTP")
Authentication (if asked) OAuth
Client ID and secret (if asked) Leave blank

Step 4️⃣: Sign in

Your tool opens the CoverForce sign-in page in your browser. Sign in with your CoverForce email and password. If nothing opens, check that your browser isn't blocking pop-ups.

Step 5️⃣: Turn it on and test it

Enable CoverForce in a new chat (most tools have a tools or connectors menu in the message box), then ask: "What can you do with CoverForce?"

Technical setup examples
For developer tools that use a command line or a config file:

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http coverforce https://mcp.api.coverforce.com/mcp

Cursor (in mcp.json)

{   "mcpServers": {     "coverforce": {       "url": "https://mcp.api.coverforce.com/mcp"     }   } }

VS Code with GitHub Copilot (in mcp.json)

{   "servers": {     "coverforce": {       "type": "http",       "url": "https://mcp.api.coverforce.com/mcp"     }   } }

Tools that only support local MCP servers can use the open-source mcp-remote bridge (requires Node.js):

{   "mcpServers": {     "coverforce": {       "command": "npx",       "args": ["mcp-remote", "https://mcp.api.coverforce.com/mcp"]     }   } }

You'll know it's working when: CoverForce shows as connected in your tool's settings, and the assistant can answer a question like "Which policy types can you quote through CoverForce?"

🪄 How to use it

Describe the business in plain language and let the assistant guide you.

Sample Prompts

  • "Start a BOP application for Bayside Coffee LLC, 120 Main St, Austin TX 78701."
  • "Which carriers have appetite for a landscaping contractor in Florida for workers' comp?"
  • "Walk me through the underwriting questions for this risk."
  • "Add a second location at 400 Congress Ave, frame construction, $850,000 building value."
  • "Submit for quotes and tell me when the carriers have responded."
  • "What is still missing before we can quote?"
  • "Show me the applications I started this week for restaurants."

Tips

  • Name the policy type if you know it. If you're not sure, describe the business and the coverage you need, and the assistant will suggest one before it starts.
  • Check the class code before you submit. The classification drives both appetite and price.
  • Keep one application per conversation. It keeps the context clear about which risk you're working on.
  • Review every quote in CoverForce before you bind. The application shows each carrier, the premium, and any decline reasons side by side.

🗝️ What the server can access

The server can read and update your agency's applications, but it cannot bind, take payment, delete applications, or show premiums.

How permissions work

AI assistants separate tools that read data from tools that change it.

  • Read tools look things up. Most assistants run these without asking you each time.
  • Write tools create or change an application. Most assistants ask you to confirm before running one, and many let you approve a tool for the rest of the session.

You can always see which tool the assistant is about to run, and decline it.

What Read Create or change
Applications (your agency's) ✅ ✅
Locations on an application ✅ ✅
Industry classification and carrier class codes ✅ ✅
Carrier appetite and available products ✅ ⛔
Underwriting questions and your answers ✅ ✅
Broker code assignment on an application ✅ ✅
Your agency profile selection ✅ ✅
Quote status and counts ✅ ⛔
Carrier appointments (broker codes themselves) ✅ Portal only
Premiums, carrier names, decline reasons Portal only ⛔

What no tool can do

  • Bind a policy, take a payment, or move money.
  • Delete an application.
  • Change your agency's carrier appointments.
  • Return a Social Security number or a carrier credential.

🏰 Data and security

Your password stays on CoverForce's sign-in page, quote details stay in the portal, and CoverForce never trains AI models on your data.

How sign-in works
Authentication uses OAuth 2.0. You enter your CoverForce password only on the CoverForce sign-in page. The server issues a short-lived session to your AI assistant. Your CoverForce access token never leaves CoverForce's servers.

What the server sends your AI assistant
Only what the conversation needs to continue: the application data you entered, the industry and class codes it resolved, the underwriting questions your selected carriers ask, and the count of carriers that quoted, declined, or failed.

It never sends carrier names on quotes, premiums, quote identifiers, account identifiers, Social Security numbers, or carrier credentials.

Why quote details stay in the portal
AI providers retain conversation history under their own policies. Our carrier agreements don't allow carrier-level quote detail in that history. So premiums, carrier names, and decline reasons are shown in the CoverForce agent portal, behind your own login.

Audit trail
Every action the server takes is recorded against your agent profile, exactly as if you had done it in the portal yourself.

Conversation retention by your AI provider
CoverForce does not use your data, or your clients' data, to train AI models. Your conversations are retained by your AI provider under its own terms and privacy policy, not by CoverForce. Review those settings, including any model-training opt-out, before you use the connector for client work. Share only the business information needed to quote the risk.

Who does what
CoverForce is technology infrastructure, not an insurance agency. All quoting and binding is performed by your licensed agency under its own carrier appointments. Carriers underwrite and issue every policy, and handle all claims directly.

Your data is processed under the CoverForce Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

🦉 Frequently asked questions

Access and setup

Do I need a separate CoverForce approval to connect?
No. You sign in with your own CoverForce credentials. If your agency uses CoverForce today, you already have a login.

I don't have a CoverForce account. Can I still use this?
Yes. Choose Register on the sign-in page to create your agency and agent profile. New agencies are verified for licensing before activation.

Does my AI assistant see my CoverForce password?
No. You enter it only on the CoverForce sign-in page.

I don't see the Developer mode toggle in ChatGPT.
Developer mode is only on paid plans (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu) and only on the web. On a Business, Enterprise, or Edu workspace, your workspace admin needs to allow it first.

I can't find "Add custom connector" in Claude.
On Team and Enterprise plans, only an Owner can add custom connectors. Ask your Owner to add CoverForce, then connect it under Customize > Connectors.

The CoverForce sign-in page didn't open.
Check that your browser isn't blocking pop-ups, then try connecting again.

Can I use this outside the United States?
No. The server is available to U.S.-based licensed insurance professionals only, for U.S. commercial insurance.

Quoting and applications

The assistant says my carrier has no broker code.
Add the carrier appointment in the agent portal under Settings, then tell the assistant it's done. It re-checks and continues.

Can I see premiums in the chat?
No. Open the application link the assistant gives you. The portal shows every quote with the carrier, the premium, and any decline reasons.

Why doesn't it ask me every question on the application?
It asks only what your selected carriers actually need for that risk.

Quoting seems slow.
Carriers respond in roughly five to sixty seconds each. The assistant reports once all of them have answered. Ask for the status at any time.

What happens to my application if the chat ends?
Nothing is lost. The application lives in CoverForce, not in the conversation. Sign in to the agent portal to find it, or start a new chat and ask the assistant to search for it.

Which policy type should I ask for?
Name it if you know it. If you're not sure, describe the business and the coverage you need, and the assistant will suggest the policy type before it starts the application.

Can I bind in the chat?
No. Binding, payment plan selection, and payment all happen in the CoverForce agent portal.

Data & Security

Where does my client's information go?
To CoverForce, and to the carriers you choose to submit to, for the purpose of producing quotes. Your conversation is also retained by your AI provider under its own policies.

Will a Social Security number ever be requested?
Not by the server. It never asks for or accepts one. If a carrier requires one to bind, it is collected in the portal.

Is my activity logged?
Yes. Every action is recorded against your agent profile, the same as portal activity.

Does CoverForce train AI models on my data?
No. CoverForce does not use your data, or your clients' data, to train AI models. Model-training behavior in the conversation itself is governed by your AI provider's own settings, which you control in that product.
